A high vacuum, thermionic emission (tungsten) instrument principally used for surface topographical observation and recording of biological samples. Hydrated biological material requires controlled drying procedures e.g. critical point drying (CPD) prior to observation. Applications include visualisation of surface morphology of cell cultures, plant and animal tissues, bacteria and biofilms.
