X-Ray powder diffraction

More information.

The XRD equipment uses a copper radiation source to qualitatively analyse powdered samples. The resultant scans can be matched for compound or mineral name by searching a database of standard patterns. 1g to 2g of finely ground powder is loaded into a cavity mount or alternatively, if sample quantity is small, it can be mixed with acetone and pipetted onto a glass substrate. Up to 35 samples can be placed into a rack holder and each one automatically scanned (about 40 minutes per sample). This equipment is housed in a separate room so that Radiation Safety rules can be effectively met.
