Description: LSMSF comprises three nodes for the provision of organic and light element stable isotope mass spectrometry to the UK life sciences community, located at SUERC, East Kilbride, CEH, Lancaster and Bristol, University of Bristol. A more integrated approach improves accessibility to the Facility nodes and promotes efficient operation of the Facility overall. Whilst located at geographically distinct locations the Facility operates as a ‘one-stop-shop’ providing users with a single point of contact, the synergistic benefit of this mode of operation makes optimal use of the current resources.

Name: Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric & Radio Research (CFARR)
Description: The Facility operates a powerful combination of Doppler radars, lidars, radiometers, and supporting instruments; the Chilbolton Advanced Meteorological Radar (CAMRa) is mounted on the world's largest fully-steerable meteorological radar antenna. This combination of instruments, making detailed observations of precipitation, clouds, water vapour and aerosol, enables world-leading research. The Facility also has radiosonde and tethered balloon launch capability. The Chilbolton Facility currently operates more than twenty major instruments, some continuously, while others are operated on demand.

Name: NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory (NIGL)
Description: NIGL is a stable and radiogenic isotope laboratory facility focusing on Environmental Change, Chronology, and Science-based Archaeology, in a collaborative research environment. NIGL comprises two groups of analytical facilities: 1. Stable Isotope Facility: isotope analysis of waters, carbonates, biogenic silica, phosphates, biomass in both organic and inorganic materials for the isotopes of H, C, N, O, S, and Si by gas-source stable isotope mass spectrometry. 2. Radiogenic Isotope Facility: high precision U-Th-Pb dating using TIMS, and in situ dating using laser-ablation and plasma ionisation mass spectrometry (PIMS); U-Series dating; high precision isotope (U, Pb, Hf, Nd, Sr) analysis of solids and solutions using both solution and laser-ablation PIMS, and TIMS.

Name: British Isles continuous GNSS Facility (BIGF)
Description: The British Isles continuous GNSS Facility (BIGF) is a unique and secure repository of archived GNSS* data, dating back as far as 1997. The data are sourced from a high density network of up to 164 continuously recording GNSS stations, sited throughout the British Isles. The archive comprises 1,410 station-years of 30 second (primarily GPS) data, and 395 station-years of 1Hz (GPS+Glonass) data. BIGF activities provide support through: archival and access; network, product and website development; and archive accounting.

Name: Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) Radar Facility
Description: Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) Radar at Aberystwyth is the UK’s most powerful and versatile windprofiling instrument. It is unique in being able to provide continuous measurements of the three-dimensional wind vector over the altitude range 2-20 km at high resolution (typically 300 m in altitude and a few minutes in time). It can also provide information about atmospheric stability, turbulence, humidity and rainfall. Its data are therefore ideally suited for studying everything from small-scale atmospheric phenomena through to large-scale weather systems.

Name: Molecular Spectroscopy Facility (MSF)
Description: NERC “Recognised Facility” - MSF provides world-class central laboratories, scientific equipment, training, scientific/technical support, and high-quality data for the UK environmental science community in support of a wide range of interdisciplinary research. Infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectroscopic data are increasingly important for studying the important chemical, physical, biological and geological processes occurring in the natural environment. The MSF provides essential inputs to many science areas, in particular Earth observation of the atmosphere and surface using optical remote sensing techniques, atmospheric chemistry and climate research. Through the MSF, access to broadband high spectral resolution Fourier transform and fibre-optic spectrometers is provided for measuring the absorption, emission and scattering properties of solid, liquid, gas/vapour and aerosol samples contained in a range of spectroscopic cells.

Name: Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Laboratory
Description: NERC “Recognised Facility” - Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Laboratory supports ultrasensitive measurements of long-lived radionuclides operating as natural chronometers. The Laboratory operates two modern electrostatic accelerators, a general purpose 5 MV tandem and a bi-polar 250 kV single-ended machine, for reliable and quick radiocarbon measurement capability in particular. Processed-sample 10Be/Be, 26Al/Al and 36Cl/Cl ratios can also be determined to <1×10-15, thereby accessing ages from the contemporary to millions of years ago in the so-called atmo-, hydro-, litho-, cyro- and bio-spheres.

Name: Space Geodesy Facility (SGF)
Description: SGF Herstmonceux is the UK’s observatory dedicated to satellite and gravitational geodesy. Its highly accurate satellite laser range, global navigational satellite and gravity measurements impact upon a very wide range of international science, from underpinning work essential to global sea level and ice mass-balance studies, to the realisation of a mm-accuracy global reference frame upon which a huge variety of scientific and commercial activities depend. The state-of-the-art laser ranging system makes mm-accuracy measurements of the distances of a constellation of Earth-orbiting artificial satellites, from dedicated geodetic spheres, to large Earth-monitoring laboratories and an increasing number of global navigation satellites. The satellite observations are made available rapidly and freely, without application to the Facility, to the UK and worldwide community through the data centres of two of the Services of the International Association of Geodesy, the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) and the International Global Navigational Satellite System Service (IGS), with which Services the Facility is registered.

Name: European Incoherent Scatter Radar UK (EISCAT-UK)
Description: EISCAT is an international research organisation operating three radars (UHF, VHF and EISCAT Svalbard Radar), an ionospheric heater and two Dynasondes. The radars conduct research on the lower, middle and upper atmosphere and ionosphere, using incoherent scatter, the most powerful ground-based technique for this type of research. EISCAT measures profiles of electron density, electron and ion temperature and ion velocity. Subsequent processing can produce further parameters, describing the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere. EISCAT can also be used to study plasma instabilities, for investigations of the middle atmosphere and as a diagnostic instrument for heating experiments. A selection of radar pulse schemes is available to adapt the experiments to the appropriate measurement regime, between about 50km and more than 1000 km altitude.

Name: British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF)
Description: BOSCORF is the UK’s national deep-sea core research facility and provides a unique and strategic service to the scientific community. It provides an advanced state-of-the-art non-destructive core logging and analysis capability that is unique in the UK. BOSCORF also provides specialised long-term core storage facilities, so that sediment cores collected by NERC ships, and NERC-funded researchers, can be kept under optimum conditions to ensure long-term preservation and availability to the scientific community. BOSCORF promotes secondary multiple usage of the core material in its care ensuring cost-effective exploitation of an important national scientific resource.
