Description: OMCS offers a comprehensive service for the investigation of materials and materials related problems. OPTICAL MICROSCOPY: optical and electron microscopes to image and analyse samples providing morphology, micro-analysis and phase determination. SURFACE ANALYSIS: surface analysis techniques to investigate the properties of surfaces including elemental composition and chemistry together with depth profiling and imaging capabilities. X-RAY TECHNIQUES: X-ray techniques to non-destructively investigate the properties of materials, including composition, crystal structure and physical form. MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY: The use of the absorption, emission, or scattering of electromagnetic radiation by atoms or molecules to obtain compositional information about the material of interest and to study physical processes. THERMAL ANALYSIS: Instruments available to determine the thermal properties of materials including thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry and microcalorimetry. PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS: A variety of equipment depending on particle size and required analysis.

Name: Nano Fabrication and Electron Microscopy
Description: The Nanofabrication and Electron Microscopy Facility is a Small Research Facility (SRF) within the Department of Physics which provides researchers with access to state-of-the-art capabilities for micro- and nano-fabrication and scanning electron microscopy. The Facility is primarily used by members of the Department and the wider University, but is also available to those outside the University, including academic, commercial and industrial users. The facility includes: Class 100 and Class 1000 cleanroom suite used for sample preparation and lithography, including equipment for resist processing, metal and insulator deposition, and dry etching. We provide training for researchers to use our electron beam lithography, focused ion beam lithography, and UV photolithography systems. Users can also access scanning electron microscopes and carry out elemental microanalysis within the facility.

This provides a six-fold sensitivity gain for both 13C and 1H observation relative to a conventional 13C observe probe (according to our in-house tests). This allows us to handle more dilute samples or offers in excess of a 30-fold reduction in data acquisition time. Bruker AVIII700 with cryoprobe: three-channel instrument running TOPSPIN 2 equipped with a dedicated 5mm 1H(13C/15N) inverse cryoprobe optimised for 1H observation and with a cold 13C channel. Varian Unity+500: 500 MHz instrument equipped with 5mm z-gradient inverse broadband probe (1H/19F and 31P-15N) Varian CMXInf200: two-channel solid-state 200 MHz instrument equipped with 7.5mm Double resonance MAS probe 1H/19F and 31P-15N, Wide line 2H static probe, Varian CMXInf400 (solids): three-channel solid-state 400 MHz instrument equipped with 4mm Double resonance T3 MAS probe 1H/19F and 31P-15N, 4mm Triple resonance HXY T3 MAS probe 1H/19F and 31P-15N, 2.5mm Double resonance T3 high speed MAS probe 1H/19F and 31P-15N, Wide line 2H static probe, Single axis Goniometer probe.
