Name: Confocal Microscope
Description: The Leica TCS-SP5 Confocal covers a broad range of requirements in confocal and multiphoton imaging. The system provides the full range of scan speeds at the highest resolution. With a high-efficiency SP detection (five channels simultaneously) and optional AOBS (Acousto Optical Bream Splitter), the Leica TCS SP5 delivers bright, noise-free images with minimal photo damage at high speed.

The TCS-SP5 is equipped with a DMI6000 inverted microscope with a selection of air, oil and water immersion objective lenses. It's equipped with an incubating sample chamber which provides the ability to undertake extended time-lapse studies and quantitative measurements of live specimens.

The Leica TCS-SP5 Confocal system is controlled through the Leica LAS AF software package which provides an easy to use platform for advanced life science research.

LAS AF software offers full control over the microscope hardware and minimises the need for user interaction through intelligent automation.

Name: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope FEG-SEM
Description: The Carl Zeiss SIGMA Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope FEG-SEM delivers advanced analytical microscopy.

Equipped with the GEMINI column with its in-lens secondary electron detection, the SIGMA FEG-SEM provides unparalleled resolution, contrast and brightness for imaging highly topographical samples.

The GEMINI column design provides low voltage imaging and stability allowing high quality imaging for beam sensitive and non-conducting specimens.

The electron source is a field emission gun, which emits electrons in a parallel beam enabling better spatial separation of objects of interest so that structures as small as (circa) 1.5 nm can be resolved.

The FEG-SEM is also equipped with a cryo preparation system. Cryo-SEM techniques have become essential for the observation of wet or 'beam sensitive' specimens, removing the need for conventional preparation techniques, such as critical point drying or freeze-drying, and allows observation of the specimen in its natural hydrated state.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is made possible through a retractable STEM detector that can be used to produce both Bright Field (BF) and Dark Field (DF) images. It is also possible to mix the DF and BF signals.

An Oxford Instruments 80mm X-Max SDD detector alongside AztecEnergy EDS software provides full elemental analysis capabilities.

Name: Dynamic flow visualisation rig (DFVR)
Description: The DFVR is a flexible experimental tool that enables the study of the incylinder fluid flow process during the intake stroke of a combustion engine. A production or prototype cylinder head can be fitted to the rig and the cylinder bore and piston can be constructed from glass or perspex. The piston travel and valve lift profiles are input to the control computers. In this way the dynamics of the intake stroke may be simulated.

Name: Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope EVO SEM
Description: The Carl Zeiss EVO LS15 is an environmental SEM providing the capability to prevent dehydration artefacts in the microscopy of biological specimens.

A Peltier Coolstage allows the study of hydrated samples in their native state with little or no loss of water. The ability to vary pressure within the microscope chamber allows the analysis of both conductive and non-conductive samples.

Using the Everhart-Thornley Secondary Electron Detector, the Zeiss EVO LS15 has a resolution of 3nm at 30kV, 10nm at 3kV and 20nm at 1kV.

An Oxford Instruments 80mm X-Max SDD detector alongside AztecEnergy EDS software provides full elemental analysis capabilities.

Description: The principle role of the optical Proteus is to improve the fundamental understanding of the fuel spray formation, combustion and emissions formation processes by experimental measurement. The characteristics of differing injector types and fuelling strategies within a representative pressure and temperature environment can be analysed.

It's two-stroke, closed-loop scavenge reciprocating motion ensures that fuel spray and combustion products are effectively purged from the optical chamber during skip fired and motored operation. This effectively allows extensive studies to be carried out without the need to purge and re-prime the charge-limiting factors in a conventional 'combustion bomb' operation.
