Description: The Carl Zeiss SIGMA Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope FEG-SEM delivers advanced analytical microscopy. Equipped with the GEMINI column with its in-lens secondary electron detection, the SIGMA FEG-SEM provides unparalleled resolution, contrast and brightness for imaging highly topographical samples. The GEMINI column design provides superb low voltage imaging and stability allowing excellent imaging for beam sensitive and non-conducting specimens. The electron source is a field emission gun, which emits electrons in a parallel beam enabling better spatial separation of objects of interest so that structures as small as (circa) 1.5 nm can be resolved. The FEG-SEM is also equipped with a cryopreparation system. Cryo-SEM techniques have become essential for the observation of wet or "beam sensitive" specimens. Using such techniques removes the need for conventional preparation techniques, such as critical point drying or freeze-drying, and allows observation of the specimen in its "natural" hydrated state. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is made possible through a retractable STEM detector that can be used to produce both Bright Field (BF) and Dark Field (DF) images. It is also possible to mix the DF and BF signals. An Oxford Instruments 80mm X-Max SDD detector alongside AztecEnergy EDS software provides full elemental analysis capabilities.

Description: An image acquisition instrument for designed for non-invasive in vivo use to detect bioluminescence, based on the expression od luciferase. Name: Dimension Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
Description: This Atomic Force Microscope is capable of measuring and imaging atomic scale features and forces on sample surfaces. The AFM can operate in two modes, contact and tapping, allowing a range of applications including surface topography, phase imaging, and force interactions. It can take samples up to 200mm in diameter and 12mm in thickness. The Dimension 3000 is situated on an Air-table within a Vibration Isolation Chamber.

Name: NanoSight Particle tracking analysis
Description: Method of visualising and analysing particles in liquids, from 10-2000nm, operates by relating rate of Brownian motion to particle size. Parameters that influence results include viscosity of the liquid, the temperature and size of the particle - not influenced by particle density or refractive index. Particles contained in a sample are visualised by virtue of the light they scatter when illuminated by laser light. Typical analysis time is approximately 30s however longer analysis times improve accuracy and statistics. Can give approximate concentration of particles and is excellent for determining state of dispersion / aggregation of particles in solution. Applications include analysis of biological and synthetic vesicles, drug delivery vehicles, various nanomaterials and protein aggregation.

Name: Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope EVO SEM
Description: The Carl Zeiss EVO LS15 is an environmental SEM providing the capability to prevent dehydration artefacts in the microscopy of biological specimens. A Peltier Coolstage allows the study of hydrated samples in their native state with little or no loss of water. The ability to vary pressure within the microscope chamber allows the analysis of both conductive and non-conductive samples. Using the Everhart-Thornley Secondary Electron Detector, the Zeiss EVO LS15 has a resolution of 3nm at 30kV, 10nm at 3kV and 20nm at 1kV. An Oxford Instruments 80mm X-Max SDD detector alongside AztecEnergy EDS software provides full elemental analysis capabilities.

Description: The Leica TCS-SP5 Confocal covers a broad range of requirements in confocal and multiphoton imaging with excellent overall performance. The system provides the full range of scan speeds at the highest resolution. With its proven, high-efficiency SP detection (five channels simultaneously) and optional AOBS (Acousto Optical Bream Splitter), the Leica TCS SP5 delivers bright, noise-free images with minimal photo damage at high speed. The TCS-SP5 is equipped with a DMI6000 inverted microscope with a selection of air, oil and water immersion objective lenses. It is equipped with an incubating sample chamber which provides the ability to undertake extended time-lapse studies and quantitative measurements of live specimens. The Leica TCS-SP5 Confocal system is controlled through the Leica LAS AF software package which provides an easy to use platform for advanced life science research. LAS AF software offers full control over the microscope hardware and at the same time minimizes the need for user interaction through intelligent automation.

Name: Zetasizer Nano ZS90 particle sizer
Description: For the measurement of particle size and molecular size using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). This technique measures the diffusion of solid particles moving under Brownian motion, and converts this to size and a size distribution using the Stokes-Einstein relationship. The instrument also has the ability to measure zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility using Laser Doppler. An electric field is applied to a solution of molecules or a dispersion of particles, which will then move with a velocity related to their zeta potential. This velocity is measured using laser interferometry (Phase analysis Light Scattering). The scattering intensity can also be optimised for proteins and polymers, measured across a number of concentrations to construct a Debye plot. From this the average molecular weight and second virial coefficient can be calculated.

Description: The Picospritzer III is a self-contained, rack-mountable system which supplies repeatable pressure pulses. It was designed for rapid and reproducible ejections of picoliter and nanoliter volumes used in conjunction with intracellular or extracellular studies while avoiding the inherent desensitization of nerve cells which accompanies Iontophoretic methodology. The Picospritzer system comes complete with high speed valve(s) and the necessary tubing assemblies (less pipette and holder). It is designed to fit a standard 19" relay rack. The Picospritzer also comes fully adjusted and ready to use. It includes a self-contained regulator assembly, which can be used to increase or decrease pressure simply by rotating a knob. Pulse is setup using a three-digit thumbwheel for duration and a three-position toggle switch for range setting (millisecond, second or minute). The valve box(es) are connected to the corresponding jack in the rear of the instrument and pneumatically to the compressed gas regulator via tubing assemblies.Millisecond, Second and Minute Operating times. Resolution to 1 millisecond. Pulses as short as 2 milliseconds. Pulses Initiated from Panel Pushbutton, External Simulator or Remote. Internal timer can be externally triggered. 5-volt Marker Output. Channels independent when operated externally. Universal Power Supply Matching available, line voltages ranging from 90 to 250 volts AC, 50-60 Hz. Single, Two-Channel, and Vacuum Loading Models available. Single-channel unit upgrade.
