Name: Delta V Mass Spectrometer
Description:

High-sensitivity mass spectrometer capable of measuring isotopes of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. The universal triple collector is suitable for all standard applications involving N2, CO, NO, O2, CO2, N2O and SO2. Interfaced with a GasBench peripheral, it has a range of applications which Includes, but is not limited to: • D/H in water through equilibration with H2/Pt • 18O/16O in water through equilibration with CO2 • 18O/16O and 13C/12C from carbonates • 13C/12C of dissolved inorganic carbon • 13C/12C and 18O/16O of CO2 in air • 18O/16O of O2 in air and water • 15N/14N of N2 in air. In combination with the the PreCon peripheral it can also measure: • 13C/12C of CO2 in air (sub-ambient concentrations) • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of N2O in air • 13C/12C of CH4 in air • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of N2O • 15N/14N and 18O/16O of nitrate. It can therefore be used for a wide variety of applications including (palaeo) environmental research, studies of variations in natural abundance in the hydrologic cycle, authenticity control of beverages and honey, use of 18O enriched tracers in human and animal metabolic or forensic studies.

Description:

Allow simultaneous measurements of gaseous CH4, CO2 and water vapour in a package that is compact and semi-portable (approx. 15kg briefcase). The system can be operated wirelessly with an iphone or tablet and provides near instantaneous graphical representation of gases drawn in via an internal pump.

The system is simple to use making it ideal for field studies, compliance monitoring, leak detection (e.g. natural gas, coal seam gas, coal bed methane), air quality studies and soil flux studies.

Name: Alicona InfiniteFocus 3D Microscope
Description:

The InfiniteFocus measurements achieve a vertical resolution of up to 10nm. This system also operates on large measurement areas and volumes. Its results are traceable and ensure repeatable accuracy. The InfiniteFocus also obtains high-resolution measurement results when it comes to surfaces of various textures. This also applies to components with small radii and angles. In addition every measurement is provided with colour information registered to the 3D data.

The InfiniteFocus is used for cutting edge measurement of drills, milling cutters and other tap tools. Other applications are micro precision, medical technology, material science and the paper and print industry. It is also often used for multiple quality assurance applications.

Determines the amount (%) of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contained in organic and inorganic chemical products. Samples can be either in solid form (e.g. soil), liquid or gaseous. Name: Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)/EDS-WDS combined system
Description:

The Quanta 200 SEM accommodates a widest range of specimens of any SEM, making it the perfect research partner for labs that process a variety of samples or need to characterize specimens that would be challenging for most conventional SEMs. Quanta features three operating modes — high vacuum, low vacuum and environmental SEM (ESEM) —to allow characterization of samples in their natural states, without the need for coatings or other preparation, giving you a picture of the true structure and composition. The platform offers configurations for samples large and small, with a large range of analytical attachment. The system is equipped with external analytical systems from Oxford instruments (INCA X-sight and analyser), such as energy dispersive spectrometer, wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and electron backscatter diffraction.

The Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research (NCSR) is a purpose-built two-bedroom en suite facility with a fully integrated kitchen, conference room and lounge and laboratory control room. The NCSR is designed to study and treat disorders of sleep and wakefulness. The NCSR has been designed to conduct research examining sleep and wakefulness using psychophysiologic assessment (e.g., EEG, EMG, EOG, ECG, ERP), indices of basal functioning of the endocrine and immune systems (e.g., diurnal cortisol, Cortisol Awakening Rise, cytokines, melatonin), and a variety of signal processing techniques, including power spectral analysis (PSA).

The Multimode model AFM uses sample scanning to obtain topographic and phase imaging materials surface. The sample size is limited to 1 cm2. This equipment can image samples using the Contact mode or Tapping mode. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) probes the physical and chemical characteristics of a surface under both ambient and fluid conditions. Surface topography with simultaneous phase or friction mapping can detect variations in surface composition, friction, adhesion and viscoelastic properties with nanoscale resolution. Contact Mode AFM measures topography by sliding a tip attached to a cantilever over the sample surface. The tip is in direct contact with the sample, therefore variations in topography cause deflections in the cantilever which are then converted into height information. Tapping Mode AFM measures topography by lightly tapping the surface with an oscillating tip. Variations in oscillation amplitude of the cantilever are used to map the surface.

Description:

The system utilises UHV (Ultra High Vacuum) chamber with a loadlock system to efficiently load and unload samples. The 5keV ion gun present in the unit is an IG20 gas ion type which can use argon or oxygen. The detector installed uses a quadrupole system with an atomic mass range capability of 1-1000 amu. The system is able to provide the following characterisation: Mass spectrum, Chemical Mapping and depth profiling. The maximum size for the sample is about 1 cm2.

Name: Solar Simulator
Description:

Features a digital shutter timer allowing both manual and external control. The unit is also equipped with a dust and dirt free test area, thanks to a HEPA fan filter. The size of the illuminated area is 100mm x 100mm. The acquisition of the current voltage data is performed using 2 micropositioners and Keithley 2400 sourcemeter + PC. Other features of the unit are: 1) Light source: DC Xe Arc lamp 550W with Air Mass 1.5G Filter. 2) A mesh filter to reduce light intensity (23%, 33%, 40%, 50%, 63%, 79%) and 3) A water cooled sample stage for substrate configuration devices.

Name: Lloyds Instruments LR100K+ Universal Materials Testing Machine
Description:

The LR100KPlus is a floor standing machine featuring a twin column design with a crosshead travel range of 1150mm. The system is capable of storing up to 600 test results from a choice of ten programmable test set ups incorporating highly accurate load measurement and rapid data acquisition. A series of highly accurate, interchangeable load cells are also available for tension and compression testing. An extensive range of grips and fixtures support many types of testing.

Description:

The TLS is a time-of-flight ground-based LiDAR system for collecting topographic data up to ranges of 2000 m. It can be used in landscape surveys, quarry volumetrics, crime-scene / accident surveys and engineering projects. The TLS also has a camera mount for an SLR with calibrated lens.

Name: CAD-CAM Technology FB750 Laser cutting and engraving machine (3)
Description:

The FB750 laser cutters can cut a wide variety of sheet materials like acrylic, mdf, ply, cardboard and paper. You can also engrave and raster images onto surfaces such as wood and plastic. A fine, clean, accurate depth of cut is achieved by controlled adjustment of both the cutting speed and the power output of the laser. The control of cutting is so accurate you can engrave onto paper.
