Name: Plasma Cleaner
Description:

Bench-top plasma cleaning system used for the removal of organic contamination (hydrocarbon) from electron microscopy specimens and specimen holders.

Can also be used to remove carbon films from samples that have previously been carbon evaporation coated.

Plasma cleaning enhances electron microscopy imaginary and can be used to remove carbonaceous material for compositional surface analysis without causing damage surface or topography.

Sample must be attached to a stub or in the case of TEM, it must be 3mm to fit in the TEM holder.

Theory - Plasma cleaning

In a nonequilibrium, high frequency plasma, free electrons are accelerated to high velocities by an oscillating electromagnetic field that excites gas atoms and creates the plasma. The plasma ions impinge upon the surface with energies of less than 12eV, which is below the specimen’s sputtering threshold. Cleaning is solely by reactive gas compounds formed by the plasma chemically reacting with carbonaceous material on the specimen and specimen holder. To optimize cleaning, a mixture of 25% oxygen and 75% argon is generally recommended. An oxygen plasma is highly effective in removing organic (hydrocarbon) contamination. The reaction yields H2O, CO, and CO2 that are evacuated by the vacuum system.

Description:

Transmitted light microscope, used as a high power, high performance research tool for materials analysis. With HC Plan 10x eyepieces. Leica DFC 480 colour 12-bit (2500 x 2000 pixel) digital camera configured to Leica Qwin digital image acquisition software. A photometer can be fitted to this microscope.

Name: Polymerisation System
Description:

This wall mounted system has a cylindrical, jacketed vessel with bottom outlet PTFE valve and is designed for pre-pilot reaction with a maximum volume of 9 litres, DN150. Several stirring configurations are available and many other can be custom made by the University workshop.

The glass reactors ensure high resistance against acids while allowing visual process control and monitoring. The mechanical stirrer directly connected ensures efficient mixing and stirring low to high viscosity process media as well as excellent heat transfer.

Swagelok® components can be connected to the lid to ensure full flexibility of accessories for feeding of liquids / solids / gas.

Temperature is controlled by a Huber Unistat 425 unit and a PT-100 probe.

The maximum operative pressure is 1Bar at 200°C.

Description:

High resolution field emission gun scanning electron microscope (FEGSEM), which provides the ability to visualize surface features of material down to 1 nanometre resolution. The instrument also includes an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy system (EDS/EDX) for chemical analysis and an electron backscattering diffraction system (EBSD) which allows for high speed collection of crystallographic data from sample surfaces. Name: Dual Frame PIV/PVT Camera
Description:

The LaVision FlowMaster system family evaluates three-dimensional velocity vector fields from scattered light patterns of particles or droplets seeded into the flow (liquid or gas). Techniques like Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) are supported. LaVision's FlowMaster camera systems can record two successive images within min. time <100 ns for ultrafast cross-correlation and speeds up to Mach 4. The PIV cameras offer highest sensitivity and allow the use of very small particles (or droplets). X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) or often referred to in general terms as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA). Used in the element identification of samples and can also provide information about an element's chemical environment or oxidation state. Can be used for almost any solid material, including insulators.

Theory

In XPS, the surface of a solid sample is irradiated with X-rays. These excite photoemission from the core levels of the atoms present on the surface and the resulting photoelectrons emerging from the surface are collected and their energy analysed. The kinetic energy of a photoelectron depends on the binding energy of electrons in the core levels from which photoemission is excited and each element gives rise to a set of peaks at characteristic energies. Hence the photoelectron spectrum allows identification of the elements present in the surface. The concentrations of these elements can be calculated from the relative intensities of the photoelectron peaks. In addition, the emitted electrons are of such an energy that only those from the top few atomic layers have a significant chance of escaping from the surface without losing energy, hence the technique is highly surface sensitive.

XPS can also provide detailed chemical information about the surface, as the energy of the photoelectron is dependent on the local chemical environment of the atom from which it arose. This often allows the chemistry of the surface to be inferred and the functional groups present to be identified.

Description:

The Froude Hofmann AG150HS eddy current dynamometer is rated at 150 kW (200 bhp) and has a maximum operating speed of 12,000 rpm. It is one of a range of dynamometers that have been designed specifically for testing engines and their components in many applications including Research and Development, Quality Audit, Endurance, Production and Overhaul.

AG dynamometers range 30 to 750 kW (40 to 1010 bhp). Power absorption can be in either direction of rotation and standard or high-speed versions are available to meet individual testing requirements. Description:

The DataPhysics OCA 20 is a fully automatic image capture system, in addition to contact angle measurements, it can calculate the surface and interfacial tension of liquids by means of a pendant drop method or for high-viscous materials by use of a Lamella method. The main advantage being its relative ease and quickness of operation.

Contact angle measurements are useful for wettability and surface free energy estimations on a range of solid surfaces. These studies are important to a number of industries including painting, printing, adhesive bonding, polymer processing and manufacturing. A commanly used method is the sessile drop technique to study wettability. In addition, advanced and receded contact angles can be measured and the difference between these, the hysteresis, can give an indication of surface chemical heterogeneity and roughness.

Instrument Features

  • Measuring methods - Sessile Drop, Advancing & Receding contact angle method, Absorption determination, Pendant Drop method and Lamella method.
  • Multiple dispensing arm allowing the use of more than one test liquid. However, typical reference liquids include high purity water and diiodomethane.
  • In addition to flat samples the system software incorporates curved baseline determination, allowing the contact angle of a drop to be measured on both convex or concave surfaces.
  • Optional liquid temperature controlled chamber, TFC100 for measurements above and below room temperature as well as controlled atmosphere, temperature range -10C to 100C.
  • Optional electrical heated high-temperature controlled chamber, TEC400 enabling the measurement and analysis of the surface and interfacial tension for temperatures up to 400C.
  • Optional electrical heated high-temperature needle NHD 400 enabling the measurement of small amounts of sample for temperatures up to 400 C by means of drop contour analysis.

Name: Simulation Manikin
Description:

SimMan is a full body, adult manikin that allows the simulation of Basic and Advanced Life Support Skills and Assessment to develop both individual and team skills.

The simulator allows observation and recognition of most vital signs which are used in emergency medicine either directly on the manikin itself or on the included simulated Patient Monitor. When used correctly, these features will support the students’ competence ability to reach the correct diagnosis based on active observation as opposed to being prompted by instructor cues. The patient monitor also doubles as display for other functions, such as display of 12-lead ECG and X-rays.

The manikin allows for most relevant medical intervention to be performed according to their medical guidelines and protocols. The Laerdal SimMan contains an advanced airway allowing for simulation of difficult airway management cases. The anatomy can be changed during the scenario (via remote control) to indicate changes to the patient condition or as a response to students’ intervention. Correct form and technique are required to perform direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation. Correct use of a variety of airway adjuncts will successfully ventilate the patient simulator.

SimMan is delivered with a set of normal pupils inserted in the head's eye sockets and a separate case containing 3 sets of replacement pupils (normal, constricted, dilated) for simulation of various medical conditions. The simulated patient monitor is a replication of the Philips IntelliVue patient monitor, which includes the ability to set up the screen layout in various ways. It also allows configuration outside the IntelliVue’s features to mimic other patient monitor types as well.

SimMan is operated through a Software (SW) which runs on a PC. Interaction with the SW is done through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) where the various vital signs parameters are changed directly or through pre-programmed scenarios. The SW also allows automatic and manual logging of scenario events as well as video capture. The events logged during a scenario can be shown in a debrief viewer together with video capture. The log is synchronized with the video capture. This allows the instructor to review both the log and actual performance during debriefing. The debrief can also be stored for later review.

Description:

The Dual Beam FIB consists of a high resolution field emission electron column and gallium source ion column combined within the same instrument. This allows milling of cross sections (typically 20 x 5 microns) through samples and subsequent imaging using either electrons or ions.

Typical applications

  • Cross sections through defects and the preparation of TEM samples from specific areas where this is impossible using conventional means. Features observed can be analysed in situ by EDX and EBSD.

Bench-top ion trap Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) system. The CTC Analytics CombiPAL combined with this instrument allows headspace and SPME experiments to be performed in addition to standard liquid sample injection. This instrument also has a Markes Unity thermal desorption unit which enables samples to be trapped on adsorbent tubes and then released by the TDU for GC-MS analysis. This is a comprehensive facility that supports human factors based research into the management and control of semi-fully autonomous vehicles. Name: Transmission Electron Microscope
Description:

The FEI Tecnai™ F20 is a versatile Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) that can operate in conventional parallel illumination mode or as a Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM). In STEM mode the system is able to provide high spatial resolution chemical information from either the revolutionary new large area (80mm^2) windowless Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) or the complementary spectrum mapping using the Gatan ENFINA Electron Energy Loss Spectrometer.

The system is one of the second generation (G2) series of microscopes that use a thermally assisted field emission gun. The Supertwin (S-TWIN) symmetric lenses are optimized for versatility combining high resolution in both TEM and STEM, whilst providing sufficient space for high angular sample manipulation and high count rate capability in X-Ray microanalysis. In addition to the EDS and PEELS spectometers, the system is also equipped with a Gatan mulitscan CCD camera, a Fischione High Angular Dark Field detector (HAADF) and separate bright field and dark field detectors.

Name: Anagama Kiln
Description:

The Anagama kiln (cave kiln), is an approx. 200cu/ft single chamber ceramics kiln which reaches temperatures of between 1300 and 1400 centigrade. There is no wall separating the fire from the work and through the duration of the firing (usually lasting 76 hours), ash from the fire lands on the pots and melts to form a natural ash glaze. Also, due to the fluctuating atmospheres generated within the chamber as wood is introduced and burnt, unique and stunning colours and surface qualities may be generated in the clays and glazes stacked inside.

Name: X-ray Diffractometer
Description:

The Bruker D8 X-ray diffractometer has a vertical goniometer and is normally fitted with a quarter circle eulerian cradle. The sample holder on the cradle has five degrees of movement: the usual X, Y, and Z movements plus phi (rotation of the sample about its own axis) and chi (tilting of the sample). In addition to the common powder diffraction measurements, this permits texture and stress work to be carried out. With an appropriate sample, measurements can be made from about ½º 2θ¸ upwards; the maximum angle being about 150º 2θ.

Samples upto a maximum height of 40cm can be accommodated.

Since the sample holder is horizontal it is feasible to carry out measurements on liquid systems.

Techniques that require the use of a point source of X-rays can make use of a monocapollary attachment.

The quarter circle cradle can be replaced by a high temperature furnace. This uses a band type heater and can be operated in the range 400 - 1400ºC.

Experiments can be carried out in air, vacuum, inert gas and some other environments.

A range of software is available to aid the analysis of results.

Description:

The NETZSCH LFA 447 NanoFlash® is based on the well-known flash method. In this method, the front side of a plane-parallel sample is heated by a short light pulse. The resulting temperature rise on the rear surface is measured using an infrared detector. By analysis of the resulting temperature-versus-time curve, the thermal diffusivity can be determined. The LFA 447 NanoFlash® is a powerful research tool for making accurate, rapid thermal diffusivity tests on small specimens. It can complete tests on dozens of samples at room temperature in a single morning or make measurements at temperatures up to 300°C automatically.

Name: Anechoic Chamber
Description:

Anechoic chamber with full vehicle access, used for acoustics and vibration measurements with optional noise flow generator. No gas extraction facilities.

Construction

The Anechoic Chamber is built as a double-shell system. It is acoustically isolated from the rest of the building and from adjacent reverberation chamber by an air gap and is supported on vibration isolation mounts. The inner wall consists of concrete, at least 230 mm thick, the outer wall is a brickwork. The inner room is mounted on VIBREX OMEGA springs. The room has a wire mesh floor. For bringing in larger test objects, including passenger cars, the room can be provided with a removable grid floor.

Wall lining

Walls, ceiling and floor of the Anechoic Chamber are lined with glass-fiber wedges (G+H ASONAD) that provide sound absorption at frequencies above 100 Hz and thus prevent sound reflection from the room boundaries, so that free-field conditions hold.

Dimensions

The effective dimensions between wedges are: L x W x H=6.4 x 5.2 x 5.3 m (176.4 cubic metres)

The acoustically usable 'free field' range measures are: L x W x H=4.7 x 3.5 x 3.6 m (59.2 cubic metres)

Access:

The Anechoic Chamber can be accessed from the Reverberation Chamber through a double wing door, from the outside through a personal emergency door, and through a vehicle access door. The two doors to the outside are built as double door systems.

Reverberation Chamber

Construction

The Reverberation Chamber is the inner shell of a double shell building structure. It is made of concrete.

Dimensions

The clear measures of the room are: L x W x H=11.5 x 7.0 x 6.0 m (483 cubic metres)

The Reverberation Chamber is not empty: all acoustic equipment of the Acoustics and Vibration Research Unit, including furniture, are kept inside.

Access

The Reverberation Chamber can be accessed from the outside through a double door system. At the opposite side the door to the Anechoic Chamber is located.

Description:

Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) is used to determine surface elemental compositions with both good lateral and depth resolution. All elements can be detected in the range Li to U with detection limits from 0.1 atomic% and above depending upon the element of interest. The excellent lateral resolution permits imaging to the nanometre scale. A sequential combination of AES analysis and inert ion bombardment permits depth profiling to be carried out with nanometre depth resolution. AES is typically used for the analysis of metals and semiconductors but can also be used to interrogate flat glasses and ceramics.

Typical applications

  • Characterisation of defects, particles or other features requiring good lateral or depth resolution
  • Depth profiling to determine oxide or overlayer thicknesses and compositions
  • Analysis of multilayers and buried interfaces
  • Analysis of fracture surfaces

Theory

The surface of a solid sample is irradiated with a beam of electrons; which have an energy typically in the range 3 to 10 keV. Incident electrons of this energy interact with core level electrons in the atoms of the surface, resulting in their emission from the parent atom. Auger electrons are generated as a result of one of the processes by which the atom then relaxes. The energy of the Auger electrons emitted from the surface are characteristic of the atoms from which they derive and hence, by measuring the electron energy distribution, or spectrum, the atoms in the surface can be identified. In addition, the emitted electrons are of such an energy that only those from the top few atomic layers have a significant chance of escaping from the surface without losing energy, hence the technique is highly surface sensitive.

Name: Polaron Emitech SC7640 Sputter Coater
Description:

Bench-top sputter coating system with 165mm chamber and gold/palladium sputtering target. The sputter coater produces a fine grain, even coating ideally suited for depositing layers over a wide area. Typical applications include coating of non-conducting SEM or TEM samples. Coating thickness depends on time and current, but normally in the region of 1-20 nanometers.

The coating time is monitored with a 999 second timer with 1 second resolution. Pressure levels and plasma currents are monitored by analogue meters.

Two modes of operation:

  • Automatic, for standard coatings
  • Manual operation, Complete control of all parameters.

Sample stage is height adjustable and can be removed if necessary for large samples.

Description:

"The Beevers Press uses a hydraulic operating system that can generate pressures from almost zero to the highest pressure required for etching.

It is as easy to print etchings at a high pressure as it is to print lithos and blocks at medium to low pressures. A tray system is used for inserting work into the press, and similarly for removing work immediately after the print is made."

This hydraulically operated etching press is designed to overcome the shortcomings of a roller-type printing press which causes damage to plate-edge and paper, reveals a directional ink movement, causes paper 'glide' and 'stretching', lacks a measurable pressure control with 'hit and miss pressure changing' amongst other flaws.

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) or often referred to in general terms as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA). Used in the element identification of samples and can also provide information about an element's chemical environment or oxidation state. Can be used for almost any solid material, including insulators.

Theory

In XPS, the surface of a solid sample is irradiated with X-rays. These excite photoemission from the core levels of the atoms present on the surface and the resulting photoelectrons emerging from the surface are collected and their energy analysed. The kinetic energy of a photoelectron depends on the binding energy of electrons in the core levels from which photoemission is excited and each element gives rise to a set of peaks at characteristic energies. Hence the photoelectron spectrum allows identification of the elements present in the surface. The concentrations of these elements can be calculated from the relative intensities of the photoelectron peaks. In addition, the emitted electrons are of such an energy that only those from the top few atomic layers have a significant chance of escaping from the surface without losing energy, hence the technique is highly surface sensitive.

XPS can also provide detailed chemical information about the surface, as the energy of the photoelectron is dependent on the local chemical environment of the atom from which it arose. This often allows the chemistry of the surface to be inferred and the functional groups present to be identified.

Hurco’s Control Gets You from Print to Part Faster

Even though the VM Series machining centers have a single screen control versus the dual-screen found on the higher performance machining centers, you still get the benefit of all the powerful features that maximize productivity. Some favorites are listed below.

  • DXF Transfer is the easiest and fastest way to get the part program into the control. Simply import the CAD image, select the desired features, and the WinMax control automatically creates the program. *Eliminate data entry mistakes and save valuable time.
  • AutoCalc automatically trigs out the missing information from a print. No trig or calculator needed.
  • Program Interrupt stops cutting, retracts the tool, and allows you to jog any axis. With just two keystrokes, the tool resumes cutting right where it left off. Just like a true program interrupt button should behave.
  • Concurrent Programming makes it possible to program the next part while the machining center is running another part without interrupting the cycle.

Technology never stops and neither do we. Hurco engineers continually find ways to develop software features that increase customer profitability. A few of the most recent control features are highlighted below.

  • UltiMotionTM reduces cycle time by up to 30% while significantly increasing surface finish quality.

Description:

"The Beevers Press uses a hydraulic operating system that can generate pressures from almost zero to the highest pressure required for etching.

It is as easy to print etchings at a high pressure as it is to print lithos and blocks at medium to low pressures. A tray system is used for inserting work into the press, and similarly for removing work immediately after the print is made."

This hydraulically operated etching press is designed to overcome the shortcomings of a roller-type printing press which causes damage to plate-edge and paper, reveals a directional ink movement, causes paper 'glide' and 'stretching', lacks a measurable pressure control with 'hit and miss pressure changing' amongst other flaws.
