White Light Laser Source and Near Field Optical Microscope Purchased as part of the ERDF funded Creating and Characterisating Next Generation of Advanced Materials Project. Park high resolution AFM, Park Near Field Optical Microscope (NSOM), SC400 Fianium white laser source, Hammamatsu PMT, Andor CCD spectrometer, Tsunami laser. The AFM permits to achieve morphological analysis of the samples with a resolution less than 1. Confocal system permits to achieve 3D optical images of the samples and to analyse their fluorescence properties. White laser source provide broadband excitation of the samples.

Name: IVIS Spectrum
Description:

The IVIS Spectrum is the most versatile and advanced in vivo imaging system available on the market today. An optimized set of high efficiency filters and spectral un-mixing algorithms lets you take full advantage of bioluminescent and fluorescent reporters across the blue to near infrared wavelength region. It also offers single-view 3D tomography for both fluorescent and bioluminescent reporters that can be analyzed in an anatomical context using our Digital Mouse Atlas. For advanced fluorescence imaging, the IVIS Spectrum has the capability to use either trans-illumination (from the bottom) or epi-illumination (from the top) to illuminate in vivo fluorescent sources. 3D diffuse fluorescence tomography can be performed to determine source localization and concentration using the combination of structured light and trans illumination fluorescent images. The instrument is equipped with 10 narrow band excitation filters (30nm bandwidth) and 18 narrow band emission filters (20nm bandwidth) that assist in significantly reducing autofluorescence by the spectral scanning of filters and the use of spectral unmixing algorithms. In addition, the spectral unmixing tools allow the researcher to separate signals from multiple fluorescent reporters within the same animal.

Electron beam looking at nanoscopic features of conductive materials/samples Purchased as part of the ERDF funded Creating and Characterisating Next Generation of Advanced Materials Project the Low Temperature Scanning Tunnelling Microscope can image and probe individual atoms. This allows electronic and vibrational spectroscopy with atomic-scale spatial resolution. They can also image larger areas of surfaces (~ 2 mm2) still with high spatial resolution. Possible applications range from probing the fundamentals of surface induced catalysis to arranging individual atoms in pre-designed structures, e.g., writing words and letters using individual atoms.

Description:

M2 Cusing Laser machine uses Diode pumped Yb-Fibre laser with 200w effective output. It uses reactive and non-reactive powder materials using Laser cusing Technology. The process module consists of handling station, powder handling and inert gas filtration for flammable or explosive materials. The process chamber is sealed with redundant oxygen online analysis. The build envelope 250x250x280mm (x,y,z). All concept laser powders are 100% reusable for subsequent builds. The instruments available are the newly released ultraFlextreme MALDI, the newly released ETD enabled amaZon ion trap and the ultra high resolution ESI tandem MS TOF maXis, all of which are linked to Dionex HPLCs.

DNA Sequencing and Fragment analysis. The DNA Sequencing "Plasmid to Profile" service runs on Tuesday and Friday for small numbers of samples, or any day for full plates. Simply supply DNA and primers. Self load samples or send by post. The service utilises ABI Big Bye Terminator chemistry and Automated liquid handling ensuring consistency and accuracy. Samples are analysed on the ABI 3730 and resolved on 50cm capillaries. Data is available online by 9pm the same day for plate 1 and at four hourly intervals for subsequent plates. An online trouble shooting guide is available as well as in house customer support. Software for viewing data available as download from website. Fragment analysis by arrangement, running of pre-prepared samples on a run only basis.

Deposition of size selected metalic clusters for various applications Purchased as part of the ERDF funded Creating and Characterisating Next Generation of Advanced Materials Project the Size Selected Cluster Beam can explore size-dependent physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles. The technique is inspired by the expectation that due to nanoparticles reduced dimensionality novel properties can arise that are not present in the bulk counterparts. The state-of-the-art high vacuum system consists of a magnetron sputtering gas condensation cluster beam source and a unique lateral time-of-flight mass filter. This system allows synthesis of size-selected nanoparticles up to 75000 atoms with a mass resolution of M/?M ? 130. The size-selected cluster beam can be deposited onto many support materials at various impact (kinetic) energies and pinned by surface defects

Description:

Bioprocessing pilot plant facilities 2 x 100L Fermenters ( Pierre Guerin.) Bought with Advantage West Midlands Biohydrogen funding in 2007 these two state-of-the-art large scale stainless steel vessels are fully automated with sterilisation and fermentation cycles and are fully computer controlled. Set in parallel to each other, they can be operated entirely independently. They are designed for microbial fermentation and hydrogen production, and can be used to grow organisms at ACDP and ACGM class 1. They can be used to grow aerobic and anaerobic cultures, sparging with air (via a compressor) or nitrogen (via a nitrogen generator) in batch and fed-batch modes. Aeration is regulated by a cascade control (airflow / agitator speed) via a DOT probe. pH and antifoam control loops are also present. Sensor and process data are logged on the control computer. Online off-gas analysis is possible with a Thermo Fisher Prima db mass spectrometer. Biomass can be harvested using a Carr Centritech powerfuge (BioProcess Engineering Services Ltd). Cells can be disrupted using a Constant Systems pilot-scale disruptor.

Description:

Quantum Laser Machine uses Rofin CO2 laser of 1750 w TRIAGON SERIES. The wavlength is 10.6microns, continuous wave, beam diameter of 14mils. It can be used for various applications of powder deposition in 3 axial movements, using coaxial nozzle or with coaxial wire feed.It has the capability of welding, cutting and peripheral micromachining applications of the Laser.

Name: Confocal Microscope
Description:

The Leica LSI TCS zoom confocal can obtain high quality images from cells to specimens with a 16mm field of view. Illumination can be brightfield with a black and white or colour mode camera and/or confocal with 405, 488, 532 and 635 laser excitation. Various modes of zoom are possible with 2x 0.2NA or 5x 0.5 NA objectives. Specimen holders include plate and slide holders and a rotatable dish holder.

Trumpf Lasercell 1005 is a high volume CNC Laser cutting, welding, deposition or surface treatment machine. It has flying optics with 6.5 acis movemnet hence used for making complex geometries in deposition of the parts. It is 4Kw Trudisk laser with Fiber optic laser delivery to the substrate.
