Name: Gas Pycnometer, AccuPyc1330
Description: The AccuPyc 1330 pycnometer is an easy to use, fully automatic gas displacement pycnometer. It measures density and volume by measuring the pressure change of helium in a calibrated volume. The analysis measures volume, from which density can be derived automatically if the sample weight has been entered. The AccuPyc has 3 different chamber sizes available including: 10cm3; 3.5cm3 & 1cm3. The AccuPyc also comes with the FoamPyc Option Kit which is designed to operate with the 10cm3 chamber. This is used to provide ways to measure open & closed cell fractions of materials such as polystyrene, urethane and rubber foams.

Description: The Mastersizer 2000 uses light scattering to measure the size and size distribution of particles or emulsions in a liquid medium. Using Mie theory the Mastersizer is able to provide results in the form of volume and number data in addition to the intensity data obtained. Mie theory was developed to predict the way that light passes through, or is adsorbed by, the particle. To do this it assumes that the user knows the refractive index and optical absorption of the material. The Mastersizer 2000 can measure particle sizes from 20 nm to 2 mm.

Description: Our mini-extruder has a volume of 15ml has a temperature range of room temp to 350C. It also has a water cooling jacket to aid cooling and temperature accuracy. The extruder can be fit with fibre and tape dies for the direct extrusion of fibres and tapes. Normally Nanoforce extrude a strand and chop, then post press using, a hot press (for example) to produce the desired sample. The machine has computer telemetry giving data indicative of the viscosity, which (can be) proportional (or at least related) to the mixing efficiency.

Name: High Speed Milling Machine,
Description: Our planetary milling machine is a able to reduce powder particle sizes to a several atoms (few nanometers) and is currently the only device of its kind wthin the UK. It is used predominately to produce the raw materials for materials/bodies with nano-scale microstructures. It is also well suited for mixing and homogenising emulsions and pastes or for mechanical alloying in materials research, and has been used to make ceramic slurries for casting of ceramic green bodies. The grinding can take place dry, in suspension or under inert gas, depending on the application. Our premium line P7 is an extension to the existing classic line of planetary mills. Previously unachieved rotation speeds are now possible with the P7, yielding ultra-fine grinding results down to the nano range. Sample quantities can be as high as 70 ml per operation and the disc speed can vary from 100 - 1,100 rpm, with particles final fineness <0.1

Name: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Mettler 822e
Description: DSC analysis is used for measuring thermal transitions, such as melting point (Tm) and glass transition temperature (Tg), in a range of materials. The analysis involves a sample being heated over a set temperature range. Any energy absorbed or evolved from a sample is compensated for by adding or subtracting an equivalent amount of electrical energy to a heater located in the sample holder. This results in transitions being measured directly, providing more accurate results. The analyser is cooled using an intracooler allowing operation from -65 to 600 oC. This DSC has high sensitivity for weak transitions and is automated (robotic) providing high sample throughput and efficiency.

Description: Our second coating machine (the base coater) is predominately used to perform coatings on flexile substrates. The device uses a constantly roll-on-roll coater, and is designed to coat reproducibly substrates and chemistry with a mass as low as possible. Typical working widths are 200mm to 500 mm, and common substrates include textiles, foil, paper and non-woven films. Attached to the machine is an efficient electrical high temperature dryer with in-built, flotation dryer, IR dryer and UV systems. Amongst other applications, the dryer can be used for the controlled curing of polymer coatings.

Name: BET Surface Area Analysis, Quantachrome
Description: The Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET) method is employed in this technique to determine the surface area of a material by gas adsorption. Samples are first prepared using a Gemini VacPrep degasser. The dry and degassed samples can then be analysed using a single or multipoint adsorption method for measuring the surface area (m2/g). Nitrogen gas is used as adsorbant in this technique. This surface area analyser can also be used to determine Langmuir surface areas and total pore volume by gas adsorption.

Description: The Simultaneous Thermal Analyser detects thermal transitions of a sample over a programmed temperature range (30-1200oC). The STA 1500 has combined DSC and TGA capabilities. It can measure both enthalpy changes (DSC) and weight gain or weight loss (TGA) during sample transitions as a function of temperature or time. The analyser can also be used to gather and analyse data at isothermal temperatures to measure weight loss or gain in sample materials. It is recommended that this equipment is used for higher temperature applications, such as analysing ceramics, rather than decomposition studies of polymers.

Description: The Zetasizer Nano ZS provides the ability to measure three fundamental parameters of nano-sized particles or molecules in a liquid medium: particle size; zeta potential; and molecular weight. The Zetasizer Nano ZS can measure: Particle size for the size range 0.6 nm to 6 m m; Zeta potential for a size range 5 nm to 10 m m; Molecular weight in the size range 1000 to 2x107 Daltons. The Zetasizer system determines particle size by measuring the Brownian motion of particles in a sample using Dynamic Light Scattering.

Description: The Q800 DMA is used to measure viscoelastic properties, such as modulus and damping of rigid and soft solid materials. It can measure modulus (elasticity) and viscosity (damping) as a function of time, temperature, frequency, stress (or force) and strain (or displacement), or as a combination of these functions. The Q800 can be used with 3 different measuring systems: single or dual cantilever, 3-point bending and tension modes. It can also be used with a constant force to perform standard Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA). The Q800 DMA is a liquid nitrogen cooled instrument (-145 to 600 oC).

Description: The Brunauer, Emmet and Teller (BET) method is employed in this technique to determine the surface area of a material by gas adsorption. Samples are first prepared using a Gemini VacPrep degasser. The dry and degassed samples can then be analysed using a single or multipoint adsorption method for measuring the surface area (m2/g). Nitrogen gas is used as adsorbant in this technique. This surface area analyser can also be used to determine Langmuir surface areas and total pore volume by gas adsorption.

Description: Our FW machine is used for creating composite material structures. The process involves winding filaments under varying amounts of tension over a mandrel. The mandrels rotates while a carriage moves horizontally, laying down fibers in the desired pattern.
