Description: | A clean room based laboratory for leading edge research in nano-spintronics, computer memory and data storage technology, nano-functional materials and biosensors. This includes a range of thin film deposition, micro fabrication facilities, and magneto-transport as well as nano-scale metrological characterisation instrumentations. Our six-targets and load-locked device-scale spintronic film deposition tool is unique in a UK university. The laboratory is fully equipped for the exploration of leading edge science and technology, with a wide range of applications in sectors such as communications, defence, aerospace, security and photonic surgery to medical and analytical instrumentation. Equipment includes:_x000D_ _x000D_ laser and electron microscopes; confocal laser microscope _x000D_ magnetic and spin transport measurement systems; fully computer controlled MH, RH and spin torque switching, capable of measuring films as thin as 1nm. Description: | _x000D_ _x000D_ Wave generation capabilities_x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ The paddles will produce regular waves with a peak wave height of 0.32m. The paddles also function as wave absorbers to mitigate the reflections in the basin. Wave synthesising software allows long and short-crested spectral sea states to be generated, as well as special wave effects._x000D_ _x000D_ Technical specification_x000D_ _x000D_ The Coastal Basin is 15.5m long by 10m wide with a maximum operating depth of 0.5m._x000D_ _x000D_ Paddles_x000D_ •20 absorbing piston paddles operating as five modules of four paddles_x000D_ •each paddle is 0.5m wide by 0.5m_x000D_ •modules may be configured close-coupled as a straight line or arc, or repositioned individually anywhere in the basin._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Currents_x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Unidirectional flow up to 0.5m/s via five individually controlled pumps across the basin._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Sediment_x000D_ _x000D_ Pumps are able to deal with large grain sediment (up to 2mm grain size); the equivalent of very coarse sand._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Floor and beach_x000D_ •can simulate a fixed-bed beach and support sediment and cement beach models_x000D_ •elemental construction means that it is easily reconfigurable by two people_x000D_ •all mooring points have M12 threads_x000D_ •1.0m x 0.5m grid of M12 threads throughout the central section of the tank providing mooring capabilities._x000D_ |
