Search and discover

This section helps you search for and discover equipment and facilities across UK universities and research organisations.

How to search

Use Search when you know what you're looking for. Just type in a keyword — like “microscope” or “blue” — and the system will look for that word in the name or description of each record. It doesn’t need to be an exact match. For example, if you search for “blu”, you’ll see results that include “blue” or any word containing “blu”.

You can narrow your search by using filters. These include:

Institution
Consortium
Region (based on individual records' postcode, if provided, rather than the institutional postcode)

Once you’ve added your keywords and chosen any filters, hit Search. You’ll be taken to the results page where you can explore and refine your results further.

How to discover

Use Discovery when you want to explore what’s available more broadly. You can choose to discover by:

Institution
Consortium
Region (based on individual records' postcode, if provided, rather than the institutional postcode)
Discipline (as defined by the UKRI)

You don’t need to select a specific entry — just select what you want to discover by. You’ll see a list of all the results that match your selection. For example, you can select ‘institution’ to see a list of all institutions that provide data to the Equipment Data Service.

Understand your results

Search results will show an overview of each record. You can filter further by:

Record type
Status
Over UKRI threshold (whether the item was partly funded by UKRI and its purchase value meets the reporting threshold)
Institution or consortium
Manufacturer
Measured variables
Region (based on individual records' postcode, if provided, rather than the institutional postcode)
Discipline (as defined by the UKRI)

Each record shows key details like name, status, institution, manufacturer, type and a short description. If on desktop, click on a record to see the full description and contact information. You can click View record page to access all the record information.

Discovery results will appear as cards. Select "Browse catalogue" to view all the records related to your selection.

Export your results

Click on Export to export all your results as a CSV file.

Spotted an error

If you spot an error about a specific record, use the Report an error button in the record header to report it. Please give us the link to the record page and tell us as much as you can about the error you have spotted and we will follow up with the institution, if needed, to fix it.
